Atlético de Kolkata, also known as The Bengal Tigers, won the inaugural season of the Indian Super League and is a franchise co-owned by the Prince of Calcutta Sourav Ganguly as well as La Liga club Atlético Madrid.
Home Ground: Salt Lake Stadium & Rabindra Sarobar Stadium, Kolkata
Manager: José Francisco Molina
Marquee Player: Hélder Postiga
Atlético de Kolkata is also another team that has been extremely consistent in the Indian Super League. They won the first season of the ISL, beating Kerala in the finals and reached the semi finals of the 2nd season. Will they be able to become the first team to win the ISL trophy twice? They will now play under new coach José Francisco Molina, former goalkeeper for Atlético Madrid and Deportivo de La Coruña.
Their form however, hasn't been the best, losing two of their pre-season games in Spain and winning one back in Kolkata. Results:
- 3-4 (L) vs Atletico de Pinto in Spain
- 1-2 (L) vs Atletico de Madrid B in Spain
- 4-0 (W) vs Dipendu Biswas XI in Kolkata
Goal scoring shouldn't be a problem for Atlético de Kolkata as they have Iain Hume, the Canadian striker who scored 11 goals for them last season and he will be joined by Portuguese striker Hélder Postiga. Postiga scored two goals in the only game he played for Kolkata in the inaugural season and has now rejoined the team.
"I'm looking forward to two months of outstanding football and hopefully the best team will win ISL 2016" - co-owner Sourav Ganguly!
Their first game - Atletico de Kolkata v Chennaiyin FC at 19:00 IST on 2nd October 2016!
